Could breeding burpless sheep help us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions? According to the Herald Sun, scientists at the Sheep Co-operative Research Centre are trying to find out.
They are in the process of testing 700 sheep trying to discover if there is a burp-less sheep or which one out of the lot burps less than others. Um… yes this is true.
Study leader John Goody says the process of testing a sheep’s burp is simple – you feed them, and you then place the sheep in specially designed booths that are capable of calculating the amount of methane that is produced per burp.
Hope you weren’t having lunch!
Considering that agriculture is the second biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Australia, maybe there is some merit in the study.
What do you think?
