Julia Gillard is our new Prime Minister

I am sure we all know by now that our first female Prime Minister is now Julia Gillard. As the 27th Prime Minister of our great country, she has already started by talking tough on climate change.  So… what happens now?

Julia Gillard in her acceptance speech has said that it is time to bring the focus back to the environment and that we need to look at these issues now.

It is my intention to lead a Government that does more to harness the wind and the sun and the new emerging technologies.

I will do this because I believe in climate change. I believe human beings contribute to climate change.

And it is as disappointing to me as it is to millions of Australians that we do not have a price on carbon.

And in the future we will need one. But first we will need to establish a community consensus for action.

If elected as Prime Minister I will re-prosecute the case for a carbon price at home and abroad. I will do that as global economic conditions improve and as our economy continues to strengthen.

Previously the Labor Party had put off the decision about the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) until 2013,  so Julia Gillard is bringing it back into the forground along with a re-assessment of the proposed Resources Super Profits Tax (The Mining Tax).

These is all tough talking for now, but we have to wait and see what happens. Elections will be called this year and I would love to see our pollies toughen up on environmental issues, the mining tax, real solutions for educating our country on renewable energies and to get in the game early!

So what do you think? I am sure EVERYONE will have an opinion on this change of leader!
