Feel like doing a little shopping in Melbo0urne? Well, the innovative ‘Eco Innovators Showcase Shop’ is back for another season starting September 1, 2010!

On the corner of Little Collins and Swanston street the Eco Innovators will house their stand which actually used to be an old news stand pillar!

The renovated newspaper pillar first opening on October 2009 and with the support from the City of Melbourne had a great 6 month season.

The project was set up to promote sustainable design and consumption in Melbourne, and includes work from over 25 local designers who are engaging with sustainability in their creative practice.

The Social Studio is a dynamic non–profit organisation operating from a space in Collingwood where original fashion is
created from the style, skills and talents of young people from refugee communities in Melbourne.

Using only remnant fabrics and recycled garments, the collections they create transform excess and waste from the
fashion industry into socially and environmentally sustainable products, and give all participants the training they need to find ongoing and rewarding opportunities.

Their one month-long residency will provide city-based shoppers with an opportunity to purchase sustainable clothes,
bags, and accessories, as well as get more information about the innovative sustainable designs created by their
trainees.

Eco Innovators Director Leyla Acaroglu says the showcase shop was created to establish a dialogue around sustainable
design and consumption, and provide a platform for eco-designers to get exposure.

“The Social Studio is a fantastic example of creative sustainability and social innovation in action, and I am so pleased
to be working alongside them,” she says.

The Social Studio founder Grace McQuilten is likewise excited about the opportunity to get even more exposure for
their goods.

“The collaboration with The Eco Innovators Showcase Shop will provide an excellent launch pad for our Spring
Collection of ethical and sustainable garments, and hopefully raise awareness about our project so we can create work
experience and training opportunities for our students in retail,” she says.

The Showcase shop will be open until 24th December 2010, with The Social Studio kickstarting the season where over
25 other eco-designers will be showcased .

A big thanks to Leyla and Eco Innovators for letting us know and also for the wonderful photos!
