She is back! Our favourite straight talking activist Annie Leonard is back talking about cosmetics and personal care products. Everyone uses a lot of these products from toothpaste, face soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, moisturisers, lipstick to baby shampoo and we should be more aware of what goes into them!
So what can we do now?
Well we should be campaigning for tougher laws to regulate what can and can’t be used in our cosmetics!
Check out Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and see what action you can take. Remember that by campaigning for change in the US really has a huge impact here at home.
Check the labels before buying cosmetics and avoid the common nasty chemicals such as Phthalates, Parabens and Triclosan. Try buying more natural products with minimal ingredients that way you are more likely to avoid the damaging chemicals.
Try making some DIY products of your own. Face scrubs, clay masks and soap are all easy to make and there are tons of DIY recipes on the internet. Try some of these recipes – they even have lip gloss! Cosmetic Recipes
Avoid believing the hype. We are all guilty of this, and I am terrible at times. I love packaging that talks about reducing wrinkles and anything about scientifically proven results! ARGH!
The best way to avoid all of this is to avoid magazines and television commercials. If this is just impossible just realise what they are telling us is not true and move on! The best way to feel good about your skin is to eat a healthy diet and drink a lot of water.
