Give your CDs a second life – Melbourne CD Swap Meet

Have you got piles of old CDs sitting in your house? How about some CDs that aren’t even old, you have just copied them straight to your mp3 player and now never use the actual cd? Why not put those CDs to good use and SWAP THEM!

If you are a Melbournite and fit into the category of A. I have too many CDs or B. I want new music, then you should get yourself out on Wednesday the 22nd of September for the ECO-INNOVATORS CD SWAP MEET!

The CD Swap Meet was fist held in February 2010 and over 500 CDs were registered. 100 of these found new homes and the remainder were recycled locally.

Director of Eco Innovators, Leyla Acaroglu came up with the idea to swap CDs as a result of her frustration at the lack of recycling opportunities available for compact disks,

“I wanted to recycle my old CDs and had to do quite a bit of research to find out how to recycle them, I wanted to find a way of encouraging others to recycle their old CDs as well, so the CD swap meet was born.”

Many people are looking to swapping events as a fun way to reduce their personal environmental footprint. Clothing swaps have frequently been held around Melbourne over the last few years, however this is the first time the concept has been extended to CDs.

“Many people have CD’s lying around that they just don’t use anymore, whether it’s because they no longer like the band or they have already uploaded everything to an iPod. The CD Swap Meet gives these people the opportunity to de-clutter and discover new music at the same time as well as reducing waste to landfill”

says Laura Morgan co-organiser of the swap.

Swappers come along and register at The John Curtain at 6:30pm. All CDs then get sorted into genres and the swapping begins at 7pm. For every CD brought along a new one can be taken home. Local DJ’s will be playing tunes on the night.

Data CD’s, and CD’s that are scratched and no longer play, will also be accepted on the night for recycling.

Discover new music, enjoy a beer and do the right thing – don’t put your old CDs in the bin!
