Natural Ways to Get Rid of Ants

I have been invaded by ants! And let me tell you, this is not the first time either! One house we moved into was clean as a whistle on inspection, and then two weeks later when we moved in it was “Ant Fest”.  The previous owner must have left some sticky substance on the bench and the ant invasion was crazy!

So how do you get rid of them?

I have been told time and time again that using commercial pesticides and chemical sprays are the best and fastest way but I have 2 cats and I don’t think they would appreciate breathing in some poison gases!

Here area a few cheap and non toxic ways to de-plague your house!

  • Use a mixture of 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle. This repels the ants and also is a great surface cleaner! This is a personal favourite of mine.
  • Black pepper, cayenne pepper, and regular chalkboard chalk (ground up) placed at the ants’ entry points will keep them at out. I have been told that talcum powder also works too.
  • Putting your pets food bowls in dishes filled with soapy water stops any ant invasion in their food.
  • Peppermint oil either dabbed directly or diluted with water in spray bottles can be used on trails and entry points into the house.

What are you top tips for getting rid of ants?

  1. Hi Rebecca,

Talcum powder and black pepper does not work. I have tried both.

    • Hi Daryl,

They must be very persistent ants!! Have you found a method that has worked in your house?
I found another method online, but these are untested – I luckily haven’t an ant problem right now, I just have very persistent centipedes coming in under the door!

OPTION 1 – Spray white vinegar mixed with water to get rid of the ants’ scent trails – if they can’t smell their scent trails, they’ll stop coming around.
      – Even more ant-fighting power: vinegar and water, with about ten drops of tea tree oil mixed in. This is an excellent cleaner, disinfectant, and deodorizer.

Hi there! This post couldn’t be written any better! Reading this post reminds me of my good old room mate! He always kept talking about this. I will forward this page to him. Fairly certain he will have a good read. Thank you for sharing!
