Smart phones might be taking over the world, but here at People & Planet we still reckon that you can’t beat the tactile pleasure of a paper diary, or a beautiful calendar that looks out from your wall all year long.
We started putting together our 2014 diary and calendar back in February, with the launch of our annual International Photo Competition. Every year we have a great time sorting through thousands of entries from photographers from across the world – this year, we had almost 4,000 images submitted by photographers from more than 70 countries!
Each photo must “tell a story about a social or environmental issue facing a community or the planet as a whole”, so we get to learn about a huge variety of issues from across the world. We choose only the most extraordinary photos with the best stories for our diary and calendar.
Once we’ve chosen our photos, we take orders from our not-for-profit partner organisations – including some who’ve been raising much-needed funds with us for seven or eight years now, and a few new organisations too. This year we’re proud to be supporting 41 organisations working on issues from the environment to animal welfare to international aid, and stretching from Broome to Brunswick.
Our NFP partners sell People & Planet diaries, calendars and gift cards to support their important work – last year we were proud to have assisted our partners in raising over $57,000.
We also sell our products through bookshops and our online store and use the funds to help support our partner organisations.
Once we have our diary and calendar orders, it’s design and printing time – a significant logistical challenge for our tiny team.
But we’re always relieved when the boxes arrive in September and our gorgeous diaries, calendars and gift cards emerge and begin to make their way into our many customers’ lives.
People tell us they love the extraordinary photos we put together, are fascinated by the stories that jump out from the pages, and love supporting so many fantastic charities.
