Ginger and limes are dirt cheap in tropical areas so why not make your own ginger beer? You can make a ginger beer plant or you can do it the easy way as per the recipe below. I also like to steep ginger root in some sweet sherry to make a great ginger wine. Never too much ginger. Just grate as much as you have.
Meanwhile, here’s the recipe for the beer.
Note that this is a great cough mixture (as is also the sherry!).
½ to 1cup white granulated sugar depending on taste. (1/2 is enough)
1 freshly grated ginger root (1 1/2-2 tablespoons),
Juice of one lemon or 2 limes
1/4tsp baker’s yeast
Water to cover
Large bottle (2 litres is perfect for this)
Pour sugar and yeast through a funnel into a sterilized bottle.
Mix grated ginger root and citrus juice and then add to bottle, plus some water to half fill it.
Shake well to mix all ingredients and dissolve the sugar.
Add more water, leaving about two centimetres at the top, screw the lid on or clip it if it is a preserving bottle and shake again.
Leave in a warm place for about two days and then transfer to refrigerator, to stop fermentation process. If you are nervous about exploding bottles, use a plastic one. Refrigerate overnight.
Strain before drinking.
Note that you are using ½ to 1 cup of sugar in this drink so it is quite high in energy/calories/kilojoules. You could reduce the sugar and replace with Stevia or other artificial sweetener if you are courageous. You do need some sugar for the fermentation process. Adding a raisin will increase its sparkle but this may explode the bottle so be careful.
